International Law, European Union Law, Maritime Law, Private Law
A professional association which has availed itself of an exchange of practice and academic experiences that has later characterized the training, and still distinguishes the contribution, also of younger members of the Firm.
The Firm was established in 1978 by Sergio Maria Carbone and Andrea D’Angelo, both with a family tradition in the legal profession, who combined their respective and complementary expertise – on International Law, European Union Law and Maritime Law, the first, and on Private Law, the latter – in a professional association which has availed itself of an exchange of practice and academic experiences that has later characterized the training, and still distinguishes the contribution, also of younger members of the Firm.
Sergio Maria Carbone was Full Professor at the University of Genoa where he taught International Law, European Union Law and Maritime Law, and is now Professor Emeritus; he has held courses at The Hague Academy of International Law, he is a former member of the Governing Council of the Unidroit and is Vice-President of the Italian Association of Maritime Law; he is Co-Director of the Rivista di Diritto Internazionale Privato e Processuale, of Diritto del Commercio Internazionale as well as of Il Diritto Marittimo.
Andrea D’Angelo is Full Professor at the University of Genoa, where he teaches Private Law and Civil Law; he is former Co-Director of the School for the Legal Professions at the same University; he is Co-Director of Annuario del Contratto.
The Firm initially developed, in particular, through the experiences of legal advice to major companies operating in the fields of energy – both conventional and nuclear –, steel industry and transports, especially with reference to national and international contracts for the realization and the management of plants and infrastructures, as well as to joint-ventures and to project financing.
An intense activity of legal assistance before the national courts and within arbitral proceedings has always been parallel and complementary to the mentioned activity of legal advice. The Founders, moreover, have been frequently appointed as members or chairmen of arbitral panels for the resolution of national and international disputes.

The connection with enterprises has also provided the occasion for the appointment to selected boards (in particular, Sergio Maria Carbone was President of Finmeccanica during the years of the privatization of the national companies).
The original and persistent bond with the city of Genoa has not prevented the Firm from widely developing its activities on both a national and an international level, irrespective of the fact that the Founders have directed the growth of the Firm’s professional structure towards a dimension which is functional to selected formative choices and working methods inconsistent, as such, with the proliferation of the offices and the multiplication of the number of members.
